How Much Do Google Ads Cost for a Montreal Service Business?

By MTL Advertising · · 5 min read

Here is what you will find below:

  • The two separate costs of running Google Ads.
  • What pushes your cost per click up or down in Montreal.
  • The one number to watch: cost per lead.
  • How to choose a first budget without guessing.

“How much do Google Ads cost?” is the first question most Montreal trades ask us. Locksmiths, plumbers, garage door techs and cleaners all want a number. The honest answer is that there is no single price. But there is a clear way to work out your own.

Let’s break it down.

The Two Costs: Ad Spend and Management

Google Ads has two parts that people often mix up. The first is ad spend. This is the money Google charges you each time someone clicks your ad. You pay it directly to Google, and you control the daily limit.

Splitting ad spend from management cost.

The second is management. This is what an agency or freelancer charges to build the campaign, write the ads, choose keywords, block wasted searches and keep improving results. It is a separate fee. When you compare quotes, check whether the price includes ad spend or only the work.

Our Google Ads management covers the second part. The first part stays in your own Google account, so you can always see where every dollar went.

What Decides Your Cost Per Click

You pay per click, and the price of a click is set in an auction. Three things move it most:

Matching ads to the pages they lead to.
  • Your trade. Urgent services such as emergency locksmith or flood cleanup tend to cost more per click than general searches.
  • Your area. Searches that include a neighbourhood, such as Verdun or Plateau, behave differently from a city-wide search. Targeting matters.
  • Your quality. Google rewards ads that match the search and land on a page that answers it. A clear ad and a fast, specific landing page can lower what you pay for the same click.

That last point is the one you control. A vague ad sending people to your home page costs more and converts less. A specific ad sending people to a matching service page does the opposite.

The Number That Matters: Cost Per Lead

Cost per click is only half the story. What you really need to know is how much it costs to get a phone call or a form request. We call that cost per lead.

Working out what each lead costs.

Here is a simple example. These numbers are illustrative, not Montreal averages:

  • One click costs $6.
  • One in ten clicks turns into a call or a form. That is ten clicks, or $60, per lead.
  • You book one job from every three leads. That is $180 in ad spend per booked job.

Now compare $180 to what a job is worth to you. If an average job earns you several hundred dollars, the maths can work. If it earns $120, it cannot. Do this sum before you spend anything.

To give a real example, one locksmith account we manage ran from March 7 to October 13, 2026. It produced 470 conversions at an average cost of $39.31 each, against a $40 target. The point is not the number itself. It is that the target was set first, then the campaign was tuned to meet it.

How to Pick a Starting Budget

Start from the lead you want, not from a dollar figure you saw online.

A simple budget worksheet.
  1. Decide how many extra jobs per month would make this worthwhile.
  2. Estimate how many leads you need to book one job. Use your honest close rate.
  3. Multiply by a realistic cost per lead for your trade. Your first month will tell you the real figure.

Then make sure the budget is big enough to collect real data. A budget that buys only a handful of clicks each week cannot tell you what works. It is better to start slightly higher in a narrow area and a few services than to spread a tiny budget across the whole island.

Where Money Gets Wasted

Most wasted spend comes from the same few places:

Cutting wasted clicks.
  • Broad keywords. “Locksmith” can match searches for jobs, training or products. Use specific, high-intent phrases and negative keywords.
  • Wrong areas. Paying for clicks from places you do not serve.
  • No call tracking. If you do not count calls and forms, you cannot tell which ads work.
  • A weak landing page. Slow loading, no phone number above the fold, no service area.

If you also want to appear on the map, a complete Google Maps profile gives you a second way to be found, and it does not charge per click.

FAQ

Is there a minimum budget for Google Ads?

Google does not set a high minimum, but a very small budget gives you too little data to improve. Choose a budget that buys a meaningful number of clicks each week in your chosen area and services.

Do I pay if nobody calls?

You pay for clicks, not for calls. That is why tracking calls and forms and choosing specific keywords matter so much.

How fast will I see leads?

Often within the first days, because ads can run quickly. The first weeks are also for learning which searches and ads work, so expect results to improve as the campaign is tuned.
